Equipment

All skaters are required to have single blade skates with good ankle support. Rental Skates are not available.

What type of skates should I buy?
We do not allow double bladed skates. All skaters need single blade skates with good ankle support. Skates that do not fit properly may result in injury and/or lack of interest in the sport.
Where can I get skates?
Play it Again Sports on Rt. 7 in Latham carries a variety of good quality skates.
Problems to avoid:
Have you ever heard the term "weak ankles?" If you have, most likely it is not because of weak ankles but poor skating equipment. A well supported skating boot of good leather makes all the difference. Skates with a cardboard boot will break down very easily and give the skater no support.
Also a problem is skates that are too big. This causes the skater's center of gravity to be off and prohibits the skater from being to maneuver on the ice. Think of it as wearing shoes that are too big.
What to wear:
Girls:
  • Tights or lightweight knee socks
  • Warm sweater and long pants
  • Gloves or mittens
  • Soft hat or helmet
  • Jacket or vest, if necessary, for cold rinks
  • Sew badges earned for tests passed on a sweater or vest
  • Skating dress, long skating tights
Boys:
  • Acrylic or men's dress weight socks
  • Long pants and warm sweater
  • Gloves or mittens
  • Soft hat or helmet
  • Jacket or vest, if necessary, for cold rinks
  • Sew badges earned for tests passed on a sweater or vest
